Laser Technology Participates in Tree Height Workshop and Tree Climber Rendezvous

The year's Fall Tree Height Measurement Workshop put on by the Native Tree Society (NTS) was ingeniously co-located with Tree Climbers International's Annual Rendezvous, held at Simpsonwood Conference Center in Norcross, GA. With the focus of this year's meeting dedicated to the idea of "Citizen Science", NTS took a lead role in exposing the climbers to American Forest's Big Tree program and the work they are doing to set up measurement guidelines for it. A great benefit of this program is to provide data to scientists on tree distribution and growth patterns. More...

Re-measure of Tall Sugar Pine

Re-measure of the Tall Sugar Pine near Tiller

(A personal accounting by Steve Colburn, Director of Sales, North America for Laser Technology)

I had the opportunity to meet up with Michael Taylor this winter, coordinator of the National Register of Big Trees for California and discoverer of many of the world’s Tallest Trees. He drove up from Northern California to join me across the border in Canyonville, OR. After a quick cup of coffee and an enthusiastic conversation about his latest measurement project - detailed surface modeling of giant redwood trunks - we were headed east towards Tiller. Making the proper left at the Y and entering the Umpqua National Forest, we followed the signs (rare for the site of an official Tall Tree) and arrived at the Tall Sugar Pine.  Species Pinus lambertiana, notable for its wispy top, sweet sap and large cones, the sugar pine grows only here in the mountains of Oregon and California, extending south into the Baja of Mexico.

Another Volume Measurement Problem Solved

LTI MapSmart Software Steps In

Stockpile Volume Measurement

Laser Technology was contacted by a large grain logistics company located in Mexico which are responsible for moving millions of bushels of grain around the country every year. One of the critical factors they need to track is the volume of each type of material as it is purchased, processed and then delivered to the customer. The current measurement methods they were using were time consuming and had a very large potential for error.

Through searching on the web, they found out about LTI's Stockpile Volume Solution and promptly contacted us. A demonstration was given on a free-standing pile of aggregate and the customer was sold! An initial order of 5 systems was placed and a training session scheduled at one of their US partner locations in the Wichita, KS area.

Use Two Trails Software with Laser Technology Products

by scolburn 8. March 2012 19:14
Two Trails Software

"What do you do where GPS is not available?"

Timber cruisers and foresters needed a software program that focused on their needs out in the field and The Forest Management Service Center (FMSC) of the USDA Forest Service responded. Check out the popular surveying package Two Trails©. This software allows the operator to use a variety of survey methods to traverse the boundary of forest units and navigate to plot centers within the units in places where GPS is not available or accurate.

Specialized files are generated on the PC for cruise analysis and GIS portrayal. These spatial files are Geo-referenced and can easily be uploaded to ArcView or ArcMap. The spatial databases are attributed with calculated areas, perimeters and more. Two Trails will also generate files and drawings on the mobile-CE to help gather and edit data collection. View more information on Two Trails software.
