LTI MapSmart Software Steps In

Stockpile Volume Measurement

Laser Technology was contacted by a large grain logistics company located in Mexico which are responsible for moving millions of bushels of grain around the country every year. One of the critical factors they need to track is the volume of each type of material as it is purchased, processed and then delivered to the customer. The current measurement methods they were using were time consuming and had a very large potential for error.

Through searching on the web, they found out about LTI's Stockpile Volume Solution and promptly contacted us. A demonstration was given on a free-standing pile of aggregate and the customer was sold! An initial order of 5 systems was placed and a training session scheduled at one of their US partner locations in the Wichita, KS area.

During our discussion and demonstration, they mentioned that the grain is often stored in large sheds, as either overflow from the more common silos or sometimes in places where silos are unavailable. For this reason the TruAngle product was used to ensure reliable horizontal angles could be measured. However, the sheds did offer a very challenging measurement environment due to their enclosed nature and the fact that the grain is often piled high against the walls. In stepped another LTI product -- the MapSmart software was up to the challenge! The Radial with Angle method was used while taking great advantage of the Projected Base function for the material piled against a wall.

A person carrying a target pole was even used to get a few critical shots that were out of sight. At the end of the survey, a nice rectangular outline of the shed was formed showing all the contours of the grain piled within. Working with the accurate volume of material that was displayed, the customer applied a simple conversion factor to calculate the number of bushels of grain.

The customer was very pleased with the result and also applauded the time and cost savings over the traditional manual measurement methods they had been using. They can now watch their bottom line and offer their customers an accurate accounting of their grain shipments as they make their way around the country.

Laser Technology products proved once again that they enjoy meeting challenges and showing how we are number one when it comes to laser measurement solutions.
