Laser Technology and American Forests co-host webinar on Measuring Crown Spread
In 2013, American Forests updated the current measuring guidelines and established techniques everyone can use to minimize errors when nominating national big tree contenders. American Forests and Laser Technology, Inc. are hosting a three-part webinar series to highlight changes to American Forests' measuring guidelines and shed light on new techniques that will help participants of all skill levels when nominating and verifying champion trees. Each webinar in the series qualifies as 1.0 hour Category 1-CF credit.
This first webinar in the three part series "National Big Tree Program – Measurement Tools & Techniques", covered measuring crown spread and aired live May 20, 2014. Key note speaker Robert Levett, Co-founder, Executive Director Native Tree Society, taught attendees what crown spread is, and the best methods and tools for measuring it. Specifically, the two-diameter method, spoke method and common obstacles when measuring crown spread were covered. During the webinar, there was a high level of participation from the attendees with questions being asked through the chat feature throughout the presentation.
If you missed the first installment you can watch it now and catch up before the next webinar in the three part series is held live on May 27, 2014 at 10:00 am MST.

The second webinar will be all about circumference, otherwise known as the girth of a tree. Experts will discuss how best to determine how to measure the girth of a tree on a flat surface, a tree on sloping ground and a tree that leans. Learn what to do when measuring a single tree, multiple trees or a multiple-stemmed tree as the webinar's speakers go over various considerations and tests of form, such as bark inclusion or pith.
