The late Bill Carr was an industry leader with over 50 years of experience in forestry. He began his career on June 9, 1958 as a timber cruiser with the U.S. Forest Service. Throughout the course of his career, he worked very closely with Laser Technology, Inc., (LTI) and helped with the creation of the original Criterion laser designed for tree height and diameter measurements as well as forestry mapping applications. This was considered the very first reflectorless handheld total station. After Bill retired from the U.S. Forest Service he continued to work with LTI as an industry consultant, traveling all over the world to speak about timber measurement practices at conferences and colleges. Mr. Carr also had major influence on the development of the very first electronic BAF-scope and dendrometer called the Criterion RD 1000.

After his passing, LTI offered a forestry grant in Bill Carr's honor through Paul Smith's College, Carr's alma mater. The $7,500 educational donation was awarded to Zachary McLellan. Zachary is from Pawlet, Vermont and is using scholarship funds towards a double degree at Paul Smith's College. Majoring in Forestry: Ecological Forest Management and Landscape Management, Zachary has plans to work as a consulting forester, do arboriculture work and eventually would like to own his own company.

LTI is proud to have provided this scholarship to a model student like Mr. McLellan who takes classes for two majors and a GIS minor, is a member of the Paul Smith's Rugby team and a member of the Society of American forester's student chapter. Zachary has also earned the honor of being on the dean's list last semester.

Laser Technology is committed to supporting past, current and future forestry professionals with their products, complete solutions, training and educational support.
