The Dos and Don’ts of Mapping: Time and Life Saving Tips

Investigating a fatal accident means there is little to no room for mistakes. Even the most experienced investigator can make a novice move, and it comes down to always being equipped for the worst. Arriving on scene only to discover your equipment is outdated, has low battery life, or has been left behind, requires the roadway to be shut down even longer for scene preservation.

Investigators are already under enough pressure to collect and document evidence as quickly as possible, having to stay on scene even longer due to lack of preparation not only increases the chance of secondary crashes, but can also wound your reputation on scene.

With the continuous advancements of mapping technology, Laser Technology (LTI) developed a four-part webinar course series that is dedicated to crash, crime, and fire investigators to help educate and share information regarding different aspects on scene mapping. The third of four courses took place on March 26th, 2019 at 10:00 AM MDT, "The Dos and Don'ts of Mapping: Time and Life Saving Tips."

LTI asked industry experts and certified trainers to dedicate an hour of their time to discuss mapping preparation best practices including, preloading features, photographing a scene, shooting evidence, battery power, quality checking, and saving your data. In addition to learning the do's and don'ts of mapping, attendees were also qualified to receive one continuing education credit through the Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR).

While you will not be approved for an ACTAR CEU credit, you can still gain valuable information by reviewing LTI’s presentation on The Dos and Don’ts of Mapping Technology: Time and Life Saving Tips
